Expertise

Dr Nunes is a speech and language therapist and an expert in cognitive development, linguistics, and the relations between speech and language acquisition, minority languages spoken in Britain, and what are sometimes called 'non-standard' varieties of English. His PhD, from the University of Durham, is in Linguistics and English Language.

Dr Nunes' research:
  • Concerns the acquisition of speech in both normally developing children and those with problems;
  • Shows that in normally developing children the acquisition of speech goes on after eight and a half - longer than sometimes thought;
  • Points to the existence of a module in the human brain making the acquisition of speech and language possible, and possibly what makes human beings human.

In the past 30 years, Dr Nunes has also researched the asking and understanding of questions by children, problems in the acquisition of English in children from families whose first language is not English, and health problems in South Africa under the former regime.
